Tears Of A Clown

Every so often the wonderful world of football throws up a moment of sublime beauty. This World Cup has already thrown up two, Robin van Persie’s perfect head lob over Iker Casillas and, now, Dirty Cheating Uruguay’s comeuppance. For just as time doesn’t recognise the Greek’s Euro 2004 achievement, it will never forgive smirky cheat Suarez for his handball in the quarter final against Ghana which denied the latter a place in the semis. As such the whole football world revels in their continuing misfortune.

At first it never looked remotely possible as Uruguay, without Suarez who is still suffering from knee knack, took a first half lead following a clear penalty for WWF wrestlemaina defending from Junior Diaz on Lugano. Cavani slotted home the penalty in what was his sole positive contribution.

However, second half, the Costa Ricans stepped up. Pushed on by Joel Campbell, their outstanding player, they began to take control of the game. First Campbell lashed home a fabulous strike, then Uruguay failed to defend not one, but two identical free kicks into the box. They might have survived the first, but allowed the second to be headed in. Finally, they were cold cocked as Campbell slid the ball to substitute Ureña who tipped it home with his first touch. For the Costa Ricans the World Cup doesn’t get any better than this.
